EXCLUSIVE// J-Hud’s Make-Up Artist Tia Dantzler Talks Skincare, Fall Make-up Tips, & Black Beauty Myths

Published by WhitneyG on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 9:00 am.
Celebrity Make-Up Artist

In the world of beauty, make-up artist Tia Dantzler might not be a household name, but her body of work is worthy of acclaim. Dantzler has made up the faces of Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, gospel music duo and BET’s Sunday Best judges Mary Mary, and even President Barack Obama (for the cover of GQ Magazine). But while she’s undeniably a cosmetics savant, she’s also set on promoting healthy skin care.

So you’re probably thinking, “I can’t afford a professional make-up artist to give me beauty tips”. No worries, all is solved. We caught up with Dantzler in New York City, to get the inside scoop on how she keeps her celebrity client’s skin looking rejuvenated and healthy, her take on some beauty myths, and easy tips for maintaining a beautiful glow in the fall—all at no cost.

Whitney Gaspard: What’s the most important step to any beauty look?

Tia Dantzler: I’m a skincare fanatic and I stress the importance of a daily skincare regimen to all of my clients.

WG: What face and body moisturizers do you recommend Black women use as we transition into the Fall?

TD: For the cooler months I suggest using a moisturizer with Vitamin C which really gives your skin a boost. Avalon Organics Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion is my go to moisturizer this winter. Sometimes we spend so much time on our face but it’s so important that we not forget about our body, especially in the winter when our skin tends to be dry. I suggest using Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel straight out of the shower when skin is still wet to really lock in the moisture and leave your skin soft to the touch.

WG: My girlfriends, mom and grandma, all swear cocoa butter is the secret to long-lasting healthy skin. Is this true?

TD: I will agree with them. Shea Butters are a key ingredient to maintaining great subtle skin. We can learn our best skin savers from listening to our parents and grandparents.

WG: What about THE myths— Black women shouldn’t wear blue eye shadow or Black women should stay away from pink lips. Are there really any colors that African American women should stay away from?

TD: I believe we can wear it all! However, it’s definitely all in how and when we wear it which makes the difference—taking into consideration the time of day and function. If you’re afraid of blue eye shadow try using navy eyeliner to give your eyes a pop of color. Or try using a deeper plum lip liner to compliment the pink lipstick and to make it wearable for your skin tone.

WG: What does real beauty mean to you?

TD: Beauty to me is found in each individual, it’s in a smile, a kind gesture, the way you sing, etc. It’s about being the best at being you.
