BEHIND THE GROOVE// From The Court to The Studio: Kareem Rush
Published by Jasmine Johnson on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 8:28 am.You may be familiar with his skill on the basketball court, but former Los Angeles Clippers star Kareem Rush is now flexing his musical prowess. Unlike many athletes-turned-musicians in the past (Shaquille O’Neal anyone?) , Kareem isn’t another “baller” trying to make a rap career… he’s a singer. Releasing his first single, “Promises (Hold You Down)” this month, Rush might get what many musical athletes fail to: Airplay.
After a knee injury ended his season prematurely, Rush took the opportunity to spend his recovery time in the studio, doing what he refers to as his “second love”. Although his venture into the world of singing may come as a surprise to most, its nothing new. In high school, he juggled playing basketball and singing in the choir. So what can listeners expect? “My music is really classic, timeless R&B,” he said to ESPN.com. “I have a lot of passion for it. I enjoy doing it. I just want everybody to give it a shot. Give it a listen.”
