BEHIND THE GROOVE//Was Monica snubbed by the 2010 BET Awards?
Published by L. Michael Gipson on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 7:04 pm.The internet is a twitter (pun intended) with all this noise about whether Monica was really snubbed by the 2010 BET Awards nomination committee. With a #1 R&B album, Still Standing, universally hailed as a strong product and comeback for the singer, Monica apparently expected to be listed among the Best Female R&B Artist nominees. Her fans spontaneously combusted at the announcement, particularly after hearing that Beyonce was nominated for an album officially released two years ago (but still going strong and dropping singles) and that newcomer Melanie Fiona made the list along with three other nods. Monica responded with her own disappointment.
The outrage might be a lil’ justified if the project hadn’t been so thoroughly supported by BET and CENTRIC with a very successful reality show, innumerable web and blog mentions, video spins, and two–count ‘em, two–other 2010 BET Award nominations, including one for this network (The Centric Award and The Viewer’s Choice Award). Is this all much ado about nothing? Are artists’ entitled to specific award nominations, even if they’re already being honored with a nod? Sade and Corrine Bailey Rae both had strong returns but they didn’t make the female cut either (though both are nominated for a Centric Award and an International Act Award ) Check out the full list of nominees after the jump. You decide.
