Published by Justin Joseph on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 8:01 am.

After a major debut on Nas’ 2008 Untitled album and a feature of his track “Riot Song” on the HBO original series How to Make it in America; Oklahoma born rapper-singer Johnny Polygon is on a serious grind to the top. Following the February release of his official mixtape Rebel Without Applause, a video for “The Riot Song” was produced. Inspired by live action cartoons, the video uses over 3,000 real paper cut outs to tell the story—with no repeated images. Interesting right? The video can now be seen in rotation on MTV2, VH1 Soul and now Centric. Check out the video below and tell what you think.

subCENTRIC SELECTS// Alexis Houston

Published by Justin Joseph on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 9:25 am.

It’s no secret Alexis Houston is not a stranger to negative press. From rumors of an affair with NBC’s The Today Show host Matt Lauer (that was vehemently denied by both parties) to a reported sex change (allegedly she was formerly Wellington Houston?); she’s had her fair share of Page Six worthy media mentions. But what is a secret is that she can actually sing. With her debut album Speak Love, Life Lessons available September 28th on her own imprint All’s Well Music, The New Jersey native is out to make a name for herself as a singer—rather than tabloid fodder.

Touted as a “musical autobiography” the 16 track disc is a blend of Pop, Jazz, Electronica and Rock. Consequently, the mood of this effort will definitely find an audience amongst extreme dance music lovers in the US—if not the club scene throughout Europe.

A commercial jingle-writer by trade, the transition to performing popular music was a three year process of ducking in out of studios throughout the states and working with established producers such as Grammy Award winning Gregg Pagani, Ivan & Carvin, The Insomniax and Jake Ridley.

The highlights of the album include a cover of Deniece Williams’ 1976 hit “Free” produced by musical partner Sheldon Goode and the club mix of the lead single “Change”—which is reminiscent of another musical Houston.

The Verdict: Worth a listen

subRELEASE// Choklate “Overdose” featuring Drake

Published by Anita Bryant on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 11:53 am.

Commercial and Indie music unite! Soul singer Choklate releases “OVERDOSE” featuring Drake (ever heard of him?). This unexpected duet  is a great fix for music fans who have been craving for something new. The combination of Choklate’s soulful vocals and Drake’s catchy lyrics is kismet.  Hopefully musically integrating the major and independent sets becomes a trend.
