Featuring exclusive interviews with exiled activist Assata Shakur, former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver, and political prisoner Mutulu Shakur; Black August: A Hip-Hop Benefit Concert, directed by Dream Hampton, documents the spirit behind the annual event organized by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. The non-profit association has produced the event for over decade, in an attempt to raiser social awareness and support of political prisoners in the United States. Part concert film, Black August showcases performances from Mos Def, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, David Banner, Common, and Erykah Badu; shot in New York, Cuba and South Africa.

Presented by ImageNation Cinema Foundation and The Film Society of Lincoln Center, The film’s screening will be feted tonight with a night of festivities held at New York’s Walter Reade Theatre at Lincoln Center all hosted by M1 of Hip-Hop group Dead Prez.  The night kicks off with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. screening. The highly anticipated premiere opens with a live set by Ghanaian emcee Blitz the Ambassador and The Embassy Ensemble. EVENTS// Anthony David in D.C

Published by Fusicology on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 9:31 am.

With a co-sign from First Lady Michelle Obama in a recent Marie Claire magazine, it seems Anthony David is one of the coolest; laid back and talented people on the planet. He sings, plays the guitar and writes Grammy nominated songs (“Words” featuring India Arie). Maybe it’s in the water (or biscuits?) down there in Georgia, but  David is one of the performers that will be making big moves—starting with his latest project, As Above, So Below due to release this October.
