YOU NEED TO KNOW// Zane One

Published by tbello on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 9:43 am.

To say that the art of hip-hop is in her blood would be a massive understatement if referring to Zane One. Zane is the last born daughter of a pastor/poet as well as sister and cousin to the members of the legendary Los Angeles underground group LPG. She has opened for Cody Chestnut, and wrote songs alongside John Villa Lobos. With 20 years of hip-hop under her belt,  Zane will not only remind you why female emcees belong in the game, but also how aggressive and skillful artistry can manifest where you least expect it.

LISTEN UP// Nemiss “Heart In Tact”

Published by tbello on Monday, July 5, 2010 at 10:05 pm.

Given the name “ Ms. Hip Hop” in high school, it’s no surprise Chicago-bred femcee Nemiss was honored as one of 300 international young women by the official New York’s Hip Hop Association. Very few emcees have been able to combine poetic beauty with a hard hitting precise flow, she has toured with Black Sheep, Gang Starr, The Roots, and Common. Check out the video “Heart In Tact” produced by Daru Jones ….

LISTEN UP// Speech Debelle “Better Days”

Published by tbello on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 6:01 am.

Another talent has just touched down from London-town. Ms. Speech Debelle  is a soulful British rapper with a warm voice and mad skills. Her honest insights and dry sense of irony make for a wonderfully constructed sound on the track “Better Days,” that features the pop-rock oddball vocals of Mikachu. ED NOTE: This song is definitely a reason to get musically excited.

Published by tbello on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 6:00 am.

The Heavy are a Rock – Soul-influenced quartet formed in the village of Noid, England. The band consists of Kelvin Swaby, Dan Taylor, Spencer Page , Chris Ellul. The musical collective continually crosses genre lines. From country to R&B, garage punk to rock and roll, Studio one to the slums of Shaolin; you’ll find that The Heavy are indeed like a pack of musical schizophrenics—with a strong sense of focus.

Andreya Triana – A Town Called Obsolete

Published by tbello on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 9:14 am.

Andreya Triana returns with the last single before the release of her debut album, ‘Lost Where I Belong’ (23 August). ‘A Town Called Obsolete’ is an very upbeat and soulul plea for patience and faith in the face of indifference. Triana’s voice is right for this mixture of longing and hope, smokey, beautiful and tonally perfect. Remix duties are taken care of by the hotly-tipped Mount Kimbie. Labelmates of Joy Orbison on Hotflush Records, the duo string Andreya’s backing vox over melancholy pads like Christmas lights round the screen of a lovelorn mainframe. Computer-soul never sounded so melancholy.

Pugs Atomz

Published by tbello on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 1:51 pm.

Pugs Atomz is a son of an ex Panther turned Radio host from Pittsburgh PA. His love of Hip Hop developed when his family moved to Chicago; during grade school he would see the graffiti on the trains and in his neighborhood of Englewood. These trains also would have rap groups performing and singers doing their thing for spare change. The first rap he wrote was in 5th grade for a poetry assignment, so the next day when he recited his, everybody said “you’re rapping, he’s a rapper”. From that point it started to make more sense to him.
