DOWNLOAD// Kil “Through The Wire” [Beats Inspired by HBO's "The Wire"]
Published by vickey on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 1:17 pm.
Music producer Kil has been churning out beats for indie artists for years. With a production style that’s reminiscent of DJ Premier and Pete Rock, the Philadelphia native is releasing “Through the Wire”—a mix of heavy hitting instrumentals that are spiced with sound bites from the HBO series “The Wire” (one of the best shows in the history of television). ”Through the Wire is the perfect marriage between two of my loves, making beats and the HBO television series The Wire. I’ve been addicted to the Wire since it first dropped in 2002 and have been using samples from the show to match the mood of my beats ever since. Over the years I’ve made a rack of beats like this, and decided to put this project together for all the Wire heads out there. If you mess with the Wire and dope beats, this album is right up your alley,” said Kil. The CD is available for download in both clean and dirty versions.

subCENTRIC SELECTS// Kokayi
Published by vickey on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 1:14 pm.
While mainstream radio continues to be flooded with cookie-cutter pop tunes and artists, there is an abundance of independent artists that are steady on the grind concocting forward thinking vulpine projects. One of those being Rapper/producer Kokayi. The member of the of the world renowned Hip-hop collective Opus Akoben, recently dropped the quirky, campy parody “Roxtar” off his latest project, “Robots & Dinosaurs”. subCentric caught up with Kokayi to find out more about his motivation for “Robots & Dinosaurs”, the concept behind his new video and the top five album that have shaped him as an artist.
subCentric: What’s the driving force behind your latest release “Robots & Dinosaurs”?
Kokayi: The driving force for the record is the option for the masses to hear
honest music. The concept of the record was to pose the question, what
does one do if they like both robot (electronic, semi-human, soulless)
and dinosaur(organic, purist, fear of change) hip hop? I provide for
both the young and the old and the lost demographic between, quality
music. Read the rest of this entry »

LISTEN UP// Bilal “Levels”EP
Published by vickey on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 2:47 pm.Artists releasing CD singles and remix/instrumental EPs is nowadays a far off notion. The standard that was the EP, has morphed into the mixtape—much to my chagrin. Luckily, Plug Research brings back the EP single with the release of Bilal’s “Levels” —which features an album edit, Instrumental and a re-edit from Flying Lotus, as well as remixes from Ken Bts, and labelmates Sonnymoon. While the EP is cool—always nice to have an instrumental Bilal track to vibe out to—the Sonnymoon remix is the standout. The sweet melodic vocals of the groups lead singer, Anna, intertwined with Bilal vocals make for an angelic duet.
