Indie soul finally has a place to call home in Los Angeles thanks to Nu-Soul Magazine and The Little Temple. Starting Thursday February 10th, music lovers can catch the best in independent soul music and beyond at Nu-Thursdays—the new weekly event at the cozy Silverlake venue Little Temple. Things are kicking off in a big way for Grammy weekend with an outstanding showcase of some of the biggest names in soul right now including 2011 Grammy nominees Eric Roberson and Carolyn Malachi, who are serving as the hosts for the evening. Performances by Yahzarah, Sy Smith, and Avery*Sunshine are on tap. This event rocks until 2am so you know it’s gonna be a party.

Upcoming artists performing at Nu-Thursdays include Choklate, Jaguar Wright, Lady Alma, Taylor McFerrin and Nikko Gray.

Jazz vocalist and multi Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon joins hip-hop quartet The Beast to release Freedom Suite, a  ten track collection of creative reflections on jazz and hip-hop. Featuring guest appearences from 9th Wonder, Branford Marsalis, Phonte of Foreign Exchange, YahZarah, Geechi Suede (of Camp Lo) and several others; Freedom Suite follows in the tradition of other collaborative jazz and hip-hop projects like the late Guru’s Jazzmatazz. The album features six original songs written and produced by The Beast and contemporary covers of popular hip-hop “standards” —Mos Def’s “Umi Says,” Johnny Mercer & Hoagy Charmichael’s “Skylark” and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop.” The merger of live instrumentation and electronic/sample-based hip-hop prove successful.

Beast emcee Pierce Freelon (Nnenna’s son) engages musicians and scholars such as Questlove, Herbie Hancock, Amiri Baraka, Christian McBride, James Moody in one-on-one discussions about music, culture and life. Starting next Tuesday and running through October, this five week—FREE— fall music series will showcase intimate performances from some of the best “new” artist from around the world. The roster including YahZarah of The Foreign Exchange collective, Bazaar Royale, and the return of former Floetry member Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart. This series will give guest the opportunity to connect directly with the artist and their new projects.
