REALITY CHECK// Vacation Outside of the Box This Spring

Published by tajchr on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 12:00 pm.

Travelling out of town should always be a part of your agenda, and your aim should be to have fun like the passengers of  ”Soul Plane” (airing today at 3PM EST).  Dig deep and step outside of the box and consider these three vacation destinations when planning your next family trip or romantic getaway.

1. Niagara Falls, NY-If you are the tree-hugging type, then Niagara Falls is definitely for you.  Located in upstate New York, Niagara Falls is shared with our neighbors to the north and would be a great destination for a weekend, or even a week just in case you wanted to cross the boarder and explore the wonder of the falls on the other side. FLICK CENTRIC SPOTLIGHT// Who is Jessy Terrero?

Published by tajchr on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 11:59 am.

Dominican born actor-turned-director Jessy Terrero always knew he was destined to work in front of or behind the camera. After landing an associate producer internship for the movie I Like It Like That in 1996, things seemed unstoppable. Before falling completely into the world of production, Terrero landed small roles in “The Sopranos” and “Law and Order” —all this while nurturing a burgeoning career as a music video director.

Jessy’s first music videos— Jill Scott songs “Gettin’ In The Way” and “Long Walk” back in 2000—garnered him some major attention.  After those two music videos he went on to direct some music vid gems like, Mary J. Blige’s “Runaway Love,” Leona Lewis’s “Bleeding Love,” Sean Paul’s “We Be Burnin’,” and Wisin Y Yandel’s “Ahora Es.” Read the rest of this entry »

REALITY CHECK// THREE REASONS WHY ONE SHOULD MARRY AND STAY COMMITTED

Published by tajchr on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 12:49 pm.

Marriage is associated with words like love and life, but it’s synonym should be commitment.  It’s a step that people take when they decide that love is unconditional and unbreakable.  Relationships may change and may end over time, but marriage is one type of relationship that people are blessed enough to be able to pick the person that they are involved with for the rest of their life.

In the movie I Do…I Did the main characters are involved in a love triangle plagued by lies, lust, and confusion that leads to a road that ultimately ends in disappointment.  The main character is married to two different women at once, and although this situation seems quite outlandish, what isn’t hard to believe is the fact that a person can love more than one person at once and be faced with temptations daily.  We’ve got three reasons to get married and stay committed. Remember: Love comes first. Read the rest of this entry »

SOUL TRAIN SPOTLIGHT// THE DRAMATICS

Published by tajchr on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 9:00 am.

The Dramatics may not have been filled with a ton of drama, but they definitely were a group that graced any stage that they were on with amazing songs, choreography, and most importantly: a whole lot of soul.

These six men joined forces in Detroit, Michigan in 1967, but they didn’t find commercial success until the 1970’s with their top ten hits “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get” and “In The Rain.”  Their work was so instrumental in music history that they were guests on Snoop Dogg’s 1993 single “Doggy Dog World” and 2002’s “Ballin’.

Outside of working with Snoop Dogg, The Dramatics have remained a major part of our culture by having a legacy that lives on through soundtracks for the films Sunday Driver, Wattstax, and the Don Cheadle 2007 film Talk to Me.

To catch The Dramatics at their best, tune in to Soul Train today at 11PM  and 12 AM EST only on Centric.

SOUL TRAIN SPOTLIGHT// Johnny “Guitar” Watson

Published by tajchr on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 11:04 am.

Soul Train is known for exposing the talents of musicians coming from all genres spanning from R&B, hip-hop, and pop, but all of these genres found origin in the style that birthed a movement: Blues.

http://www.dailymotion.com/videox3ottb

One of those talents was Johnny “Guitar” Watson. The legendary bluesman released over two dozen albums during his career that spanned over four decades.

Watson was born in Houston, TX with music in his veins. By the time he was 15, he and his mother had moved to L.A. and he immediately made a name for himself performing in local talent shows.  After performing at a ton of juke joints on the West Coast and being billed as “Young Johnny Watson,” he decided to change his name to “Johnny Guitar” in 1954.

As blues made the transition into R&B and soul, Johnny didn’t change his musical style, but he made some changes to his wardrobe—by dressing like a pimp.  His fashion sense started rumors about him being a musician by day and a pimp by night, but Johnny insisted that it was just his style and not his occupation.

His hit songs include, “Superman Lover,” “A Real Mother For You,” and 1978’s “Gangster of Love.”

In 1996 Johnny ‘Guitar’ Walker died suddenly mid-performance in Yokohama, Japan.  To catch this blues legend at his best tune in today at 12 PM EST for “Soul Train” only on Centric.
