REALITY CHECK//SEXUAL EXPLOITATION

Published by tajchr on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:03 pm.

Granted “The A-Team” is full of action, adventure, violence, and all things macho, but the series managed to bring awareness to important social issues to light like prostitution and sexual exploitation.

Prostitution and sexual exploitation are generally topics that are swept under the rug and overlooked by the majority of society.  Ignoring such huge issues that negatively effect women is a problem, but it’s an even bigger issue when the women being exploited are minors. Young girls are forced to work as sexual slaves and given no chance to live and grow in a healthy and nurturing environment.  One organization is out to aid in the fight: NYC’s GEMS (Girls Educational & Mentoring Services).

GEMS was established in 1999 by Rachel Lloyd, who was sexually exploited as a teenager.  In a mission to end  commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking, and give young women between 12 and 21  a fair shot at a normal and healthy lifestyle, her organization was created .

If you’re interested about learning more about GEMS, their mission, and how you can help you should visit their website and check out the documentary film Very Young Girls.

To see how the A-Team combats this issue, tune in tonight for a classic episode  at 11PM EST only on Centric.

Published by tajchr on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 1:19 pm.

In case you lived under a rock and missed popular 90’s sitcom Smart Guy, Centric can help you catch up—or relive the show— with an all day marathon this Saturday.

Throughout the three seasons that Smart Guywas on air, the series had some memorable moments. One moment in particular featured a then new R&B group by the name of Destiny’s Child singing their first single, “No, No, No” (wonder if they ever became famous?).  Never saw it? WHO WILL BE #1?

Published by tajchr on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:04 am.

Your votes have been shaking up the 20 to 1 Countdown lately moving Aloe Blacc, Miguel, and Musiq Soulchild closer to the  top spot.  One artist that’s in the midst of that race is the singing, songwriting, and rapping superstar known as Drake. Have you heard of him?

http://www.dailymotion.com/videoxddtl7

Drake’s star has risen astronomically since the release of his 2009 mixtape, So Far Gone.  That mixtape was so impressive and so well recieved by the masses, he landed a deal with Young Money/Cash Money Records.  After landing his deal Drake hit the studio and created his number one album, Thank Me Later which spawned the rap hit “Over” and the R&B hit “Find Your Love.”

A rapper that sings about emotions is unheard of, so it’s easy to see why Drake broke the mold.

If you want to see if Drake make it to the number one spot, tune into Centric’s 20 to 1 Countdown today at 11AM EST or 5PM EST.
