IN MEMORIAM// Stephen J. Cannell

Published by jjoseph on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 7:00 am.

If the name Stephen J. Cannell doesn’t ring a bell, you probably have seen him at the end of one of your favorite old school shows typing vigorously on a typewriter, then ripping out a page that floated like a ghost into the form of a letter, “C” on a stack of papers. Remember? Well sadly the brilliantly talented producer of The A-Team lost his life at the age of 69 due to complications with melanoma in his home in Pasadena, California.

Cannell was a well-respected writer, producer, husband and father with 77 series and movies under his belt–in which 60 of those he was a writer on. His talents make him legendary and he will certainly be missed. Celebs jumped to Twitter to extend condolences.

David Hasselhoff, whose “Knight Rider” was part of the same NBC lineup as “The A-Team,” wrote, “Another Hollywood legend passes.”

Patton Oswalt’s (“Ratatouille,” “The King of Queens”) tweet has received hundreds of re-tweets: “In memory of Stephen J. Cannell, everyone rip a sheet of paper out of your typewriter and let it fall to the ground.”

Film critic Richard Roeper also tweeted his regards, while TV critic Alan Sepinwall wrote, “His shows (Rockford Files, A-Team, Greatest American Hero) dominated my childhood viewing.”

In recent years, Cannell focused more on his writing and finished his 16th novel, The Prostitutes’ Ball, which will be released October 12.

ON CENTRIC SPOTLIGHT// MR. T

Published by tajchr on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 8:02 am.

If you want a retro taste of adventure, comedy, and action then The A-Team is the show for you. Over two decades later, 80’s show remains pop culture history and is recognized as the show that introduced Mr. T to the world.

Mr. T (ne Laurence Tureaud) is well known for his mohawk and his catch phrase “I pity the fool” —which was coined in Rocky III when he portrayed hostile boxer, Clubber Lang.  Even though Mr. T’s audience always sees his tough side on screen, the road that he’s travelled off screen is one that demands and commands respect. REALITY CHECK//SEXUAL EXPLOITATION

Published by tajchr on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:03 pm.

Granted “The A-Team” is full of action, adventure, violence, and all things macho, but the series managed to bring awareness to important social issues to light like prostitution and sexual exploitation.

Prostitution and sexual exploitation are generally topics that are swept under the rug and overlooked by the majority of society.  Ignoring such huge issues that negatively effect women is a problem, but it’s an even bigger issue when the women being exploited are minors. Young girls are forced to work as sexual slaves and given no chance to live and grow in a healthy and nurturing environment.  One organization is out to aid in the fight: NYC’s GEMS (Girls Educational & Mentoring Services).

GEMS was established in 1999 by Rachel Lloyd, who was sexually exploited as a teenager.  In a mission to end  commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking, and give young women between 12 and 21  a fair shot at a normal and healthy lifestyle, her organization was created .

If you’re interested about learning more about GEMS, their mission, and how you can help you should visit their website and check out the documentary film Very Young Girls.

To see how the A-Team combats this issue, tune in tonight for a classic episode  at 11PM EST only on Centric.
