FLICK CENTRIC SPOTLIGHT// HALLE BERRY

Published by TLReeves on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 8:00 am.

For over a decade, Halle Berry has captured the world’s attention with her striking beauty and talent to match. Setting cinema lovers’ hearts ablaze in 1991’s Jungle Fever, her career has flourished beyond her wildest dreams. Whether diving into the life of a recovering drug addict, electrifying theaters as a Marvel superhero, or being the cover girl for Vogue’s September issue;  Halle Berry conquered Hollywood’s barriers, proving she’s more than a pretty face.

With an amazing body of work, Halle Berry has starred opposite some of film’s most notable actors and actresses. Unafraid to get gritty, her breakthrough performance as an crack addict in Jungle Fever, led to portraying Eddie Murphy’s beau in 1992’s Boomerang. A plethora of successful films followed including “Losing Isaiah”, “Bulworth” and “Introducing Dorothy Dandrige”. In 2001, Halle Berry became the first and only African American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her performance in Monster’s Ball opposite Billy Bob Thorton , received critical praise but created controversy with an intensely graphic love making scene to his racist character.

Halle Berry’s talent has paved the path for an extremely lucrative career. As an actress,  executive producer, spokesperson and entrepreneur she is one of the most highest paid actresses in Hollywood.

Catch Ms. Berry in the FLICK CENTRIC showcase of Losing Isaiah today at 3PM EST.

ON CENTRIC SPOTLIGHT//VANESSA & ANGELA SIMMONS

Published by admin on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 8:03 am.

It must be difficult finding a niche of your own, with a family name that rings international bells. Being the daughters of hip hop legend Reverend Joseph ” Run” Simmons (of RUN DMC of course) and nieces of mega-mogul Russell Simmons, can certainly have its advantages.  Even though Vanessa and Angela Simmons  could have anything that they wanted, they were determined to create their own identities. ON CENTRIC SPOTLIGHT//REV. RUN

Published by TLReeves on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 7:06 am.

A man of many coats, Queens native Joseph Simmons is best known as a pioneer of hip hop. A founding member of Run D.M.C,  “Run” joined forces with Darryl “DMC” Mitchells and DJ Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell and unknowingly altered the direction of hip hop music forever.  Throughout the 80’s Run D.M.C inspired followers to “Walk this Way” while breaking barriers in their Adidas. The group holds records for a number of hip hop firsts including being the first rap group to make a video appearance on MTV, first rap group to cover Rolling Stone magazine, and they’re the first rap act to attain gold, platinum and multi platinum albums. In 2009, Run D.M.C. cemented their place among music’s royalty with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Read the rest of this entry »

WHO WILL BE #1?

Published by admin on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 11:27 am.

I’m pretty sure neighbors across the globe know this crooner’s name. At the age of 25, Trey Songz has gone from his modest Virginian beginnings to R&B superstardom. His debut album “ I Gotta Make It” introduced the budding young talent in 2005. Fresh faced and hungry, it debuted at number 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Within five years, he’s become an international sex symbol.

Well respected by his musical peers, the self proclaimed Prince of Virginia produces more than hit albums. Releasing mixtapes along the road to greatness, Trey Songz showcases his creativeness and versatility with his lyrical prowess. His most recent studio album Ready features guest appearances by Drake, Fabolous, Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy. Chart topping singles like “ Say Aah ,“Invented Sex” and “Neighbors Know My Name” appeal to both sexes, making his music all the more effective. He is presently on tour with Hip Hop icon Jay-Z as his opening act. —Tiffany L. Reeves

FLICK CENTRIC SPOTLIGHT//MALCOLM X

Published by admin on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 12:04 pm.

X marks a spot in American history that can never be removed.  Acclaimed director Spike Lee brought the life of Malcolm X to Hollywood’s forefront in the 1992 biographical film.  Starring Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett and Spike himself, the lengthy feature effectively captures three poignant parts of Malcolm’s life—his childhood, life altering experiences while imprisoned, and his emergence as the Muslim and civil rights activist that we all know. WHO’S NUMBER 1?

Published by admin on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11:52 am.

Eating black eyed peas for New Years is tradition in both the Jewish and Southern American cultures. The vegetable is said to bring about luck and prosperity.  Are we really surprised the vegetable’s musical namesake is one of today’s most successful acts?  Since 2003’s melodic megahit “Where is the Love”, good fortune continues to follow The Black Eyed Peas.

The group’s eclectic sound continues to set them apart.  Eye-catching ensembles almost makes it impossible not to have your undivided attention on the quartet.  Founded in 1995, the groups’ 3 original members consisted of Will. I. Am, Taboo and Apl.de.ap.  Three different female members rounded out the foursome before lady luck interceded in 2001.  With the addition of Fergie, the Black Eyed Peas found the missing piece to their puzzle. SOUL TRAIN SPOTLIGHT//ARETHA FRANKLIN

Published by admin on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 10:53 am.

Artists dream of the distinction that is Grammy nominated.  It’s an amazing honor to be recognized among music’s elite.  Winning is a feat in itself, so to say you’re blessed would be an understatement. Imagine earning 18 Grammy awards in such a fickle industry. A tremendous amount of R-E-S-P-E-C-T is due.

Appropriately named the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin has staying power to say the least.  Her humble beginnings as a gospel singer paved the way for a career spanning 50+ years.  Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Franklin released her first album in 1956, but sky rocketed to fame in the late 1960s. Countless number one hit singles and albums followed. “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)”, “ Chain of Fools”, “Think” and “Something He Can Feel” are a mere glimpse into a catalogue that continues to be a staple of American culture. Published by admin on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 10:11 am.

We’ve most recently seen Jacque Reid on “”Let’s Talk About Pep”, but she’s more than just a reality television star.  In fact, being one of Pep’s trusty girlfriends is a portion of her being.  As an accomplished multi-media personality, her name is synonymous with interviewing some of the most influential figures of our time,  including President Barack Obama. ON CENTRIC//”AMERICAN GANGSTER”

Published by admin on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 8:24 am.

Meet Felix Mitchell, the original Oakland raider.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Mitchell successfully became Oakland, California’s first heroin kingpin. With a knack for networking and the motivation to surpass his impoverished beginnings of East Oakland’s 69th Avenue San Antonio Village Housing Projects, Mitchell turned the streets of the west coast into his paradise.

His methods cemented the foundation for today’s drug trade. As a founder and member of crime organization “6-9 Mob”, Mitchell used business contacts in California and Detroit to ensure his empire flourished.  Using his housing projects as headquarters, Mitchell made close to a half a million dollars weekly. Local and national law enforcement acquired a new nightmare. Read the rest of this entry »

Lymon (4th from L) pictured with The Teenagers

Charm, charisma and a signature falsetto made Frankie Lymon one of the first Black teen idols.  As the frontman of the appropriately named, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Lymon topped Billboard charts with the familiar single “Why do Fools Fall in Love?” in 1956.  Riding high off of the success of the single, the group released other chart toppers including “ I Want You To Be My Girl” and “ Goody Goody.”  The group’s success has been attributed to the formation of groups to follow, including The Supremes and The Jackson 5.
